Dimensions of a Ducted Vacuum Power Unit

If you are planning an installation of a Ducted Vacuum Power Unit, these dimensions will help as we are often asked "What is the size of a Ducted Vacuum Power unit? I'm planning my new home and need to know how much space to allow"...

Whether you are after a Ducted Vacuum Power Unit with a bag or a Power Unit without a bag, here at Aussie Vac we stock both.

Ducted Vacuum Power Units can be installed just about anywhere. In most cases a garage or carport is the ideal location to allow for easy cleaning of cars, caravans, boats etc. Other common locations include an outdoor services area, a plant room, sub-floor area or basement.

All Power Units are designed to be hung from a wall with a specially designed mounting bracket supplied with all units.

When installing the Power Unit, it is important that you install the Power Unit on a wall at least 300mm above finished ground level. This allows air to circulate around the motor and will allow you to remove the dirt canister.
A minimum of 300mm at the top of the Power Unit will allow access to the unit to change the filter bag.

You can see our range of Power Units online and further information can be found in in our blog - Ducted Vacuum Power Units.

How many Plug-In Hose Points work with a Ducted Vacuum Power Unit?

When deciding which Power Unit is required for your Ducted Vacuum system, it is important to remember that they system uses only one Plug-In hose point at a time.

The length of the pipe run to the fartherest point, away from the Power Unit, will determine which Power Unit to use.

A Ducted Vacuum system, with lots of Plug-In hose points, doesn't necessarily mean that you need a big Power Unit.

Our recommendations for the number of Plug-In hose points based on the square meterage of your house, is listed below.
*Please note that this is a standard guideline and Power Units may need to sized up or down depending on the installation.

How do I choose which Power Unit works with my Chameleon Retractable Hose System?

To ensure that you choose the correct size Power Unit for your Chameleon Retractable Hose System, it is important to remember that the system uses only one retractable hose point at a time. Just because you have lots of retractable hose points, doesn't mean that you need a big unit. The length of the pipe run to the fartherest point will determine the size of the Power Unit.

To maximize coverage, install retractable hose points in central areas.
A well-located Chameleon Retractable Hose Point with a 15mt hose can cover up to 2,200 sq. ft. of living space.

Selecting a Power Unit with strong suction and substantial airflow is important to provide proper hose retraction.

Power Units - Bagged vs Bagless

There are two types of Ducted Vacuum Power Units - bagged and bagless.

Bagged Power Units use paper or cloth bags to filter and collect the dust, whilst bagless ducted vacuums use cyclonic filtration to filter and store the dust in a dirt collectors.

To ensure that you choose the correct size Power Unit, whether it is a bagged or bagless Power Unit, it is important to remember that the ducted vacuum uses only one hose point at a time, so just because you have lots of hose points, it doesn't mean that you need a big unit. The length of the pipe run to the fartherest point will determine the size.

Bagged Power Units

The benefit of a bagged Power Unit is that they are a simple drum with a bag inside. It is very quick and easy to remove the bag and then dispose of it. It is imperative that the bags are replaced when the dirt level is nearing the the top of the bag otherwise the efficiency of the vacuum (mainly the suction) may suffer.

Bagless Power Units

A bagless Power Unit will give the same or similar performance as your bagged ducted vacuum system. Instead of using a bag, bagless systems use cartridge or foam to filter dust. The advantage is obviously you won't need to buy bags to run the system, the disadvantage is the unit may need regular maintenance, ie the filter has to be cleaned to keep the suction level high, because dust stuck in the filter will reduce the airflow and also the vacuum power.

Apart from one using bags and the other using a dirt canister, both Power Units, remove all vacuumed dust, dirt and allergens out or your living area and into a canister - usually located in the garage - to dramatically improve indoor air quality. That makes for a healthier home even if you don't suffer from allergies.
The post Power Units - Bagged vs Bagless appeared first on Learn More.

Chameleon Retractable Hose System

Vacuuming should be convenient, easy and a even a little fun. With the Chameleon, it can be all three!! The Chameleon can be used for both quick clean-ups and whole-house vacuuming. It's just one of the ways Chameleon changes to meet your cleaning needs.

Unlike portable vacuum cleaners that can re-circulate dust, a Chameleon Retractable Hose System removes all vacuumed dust, dirt and allergens out of your living area and into a canister - usually located in the garage - to dramatically improve indoor air quality. That makes for a healthier home even if you don't suffer from allergies.

Versatile enough to be used just about anywhere, a Chameleon Retractable Hose System will clean: carpets; polished floor boards; slate, tile & vinyl floors; curtains and blinds; cornices, skirting boards & shelves; furniture; staircases; cars, caravans & boats; verandahs, decking and al-fresco's

The loud irritating noise associated with portable vacuum cleaners is dramatically reduced with a Chameleon Retractable Hose System. The Ducted Vacuum Power Unit is usually located well away from living areas, so you can vacuum without disturbing other activities going on in your home. Mufflers and silencers can be fitted to most models to reduce sound levels even further. A Ducted Vacuum's filter bags or buckets require changing only two or three times a year at most.

Your Chameleon Retractable Hose System is built to last, making it a permanent feature and excellent selling point of your home. A Chameleon Retractable Hose System will increase the value of your home - well in excess of the original purchase price.

DIY Complete Kit - Hose Kits

The difference between the Ducted Vacuum Deluxe Hose Kit and the Deluxe Switch Hose Kit is the hose.

Both hoses that are available to purchase in the DIY Complete Kits are available in 9mt, 10mtr and 12mtr lengths.

Standard Ducted Vacuum Hose

Standard ducted vacuum hose is the most common type of hose supplied with new ducted vacuum systems.

In most cases. the end you plug into the wall or floor will have a metal ring as pictured in the top left of the picture.

The ring is important as it makes a connection with two low-voltage contact pins inside the wall/floor plate to turn on your ducted vacuum motor. Therefore, with this type of hose, the vacuum motor starts as soon as you plug in the hose, and the motor stops as soon as you remove it.

Ducted Vacuum Switch Hose

A ducted vacuum switch hose allows you to start and stop the vacuum from the handle.

There's no need to remove the hose if you want to momentarily stop vacuuming simply flick the switch to stop the motor & flick it again to resume vacuuming.

In order for a switch hose to work correctly, it must be inserted into the wall/floor plate correctly. This is easily done by ensuring the plastic tab on the hose cuff slots into the locating tabs on the wall/floor plate as shown opposite.

If the hose is not plugged in correctly, the vacuum motor will but the switch on the handle will not work until the hose is plugged in correctly.

The cleaning accessories included in both the Deluxe Hose Kit & Deluxe Switch Hose Kits are:

Deluxe Universal Carpet Head
Hard Floor Brush - 300mm
Telescopic Wand
Crevice Tool
Upholstery Brush
Dusting Brush
Hose Hanger
The post DIY Complete Kit - Hose Kits appeared first on Learn More.

10 Reasons to choose a ducted vacuum

An Aussie Vac ducted vacuum system provides everything you need for easy, effective and affordable whole home cleaning.

Here are 10 great reasons why a ducted vacuum system is an investment worth making.

1. Ducted vacuums improve your health

Every day we breathe in billions of polluting particles around the home. In fact, the average house collects 18kg of dust a year! Along with other allergens this can have a major impact on health, especially for asthma and allergy sufferers.

While portable vacuum cleaners appear to clean a room, they in fact release dust, bacteria and allergens back into the air. Aussie Vac ducted vacuum systems remove all vacuumed dust particles, allergens and noxious odours, creating a healthier living environment for you and your family.

2. Ducted vacuums are cost effective

Did you know that most ducted vacuum systems cost roughly the same as a high quality portable vacuum cleaner? The differences are that ducted vacuum systems last considerably longer (up to four times in fact), are more robust and require less maintenance.

It all adds up to a more cost effective investment.

3. Ducted vacuums are convenient

Imagine... Never tripping over the vacuum cord., No loud noises to distract other members of the house and no electrical plugs to keep the kids away from. Easier and faster vacuuming and a lot less physical strain. Yes, Aussie Vac ducted vacuum systems are convenient.

4. Ducted vacuums offer more powerful suction

An Aussie Vac ducted vacuum system has up to five times more power than most conventional portable vacuum cleaners.

The heavy duty 'by-pass' motors used in all Aussie Vac systems ensure hard to shift dust and dirt will be removed from your valuable carpets, soft furnishings and other floor coverings, both protecting them and prolonging their lives. The ducted vacuum system also works well on curtains.

5. Ducted vacuums let you clean up fast

Ducted vacuum systems are versatile enough to be used just about anywhere. Carpets, hard floors, curtains, skirting, staircases, cars and verandas can all be cleaned with a ducted vacuum system - even the family pet (yes, we have actually tested this - results differ from pet to pet!).

The longer hose and convenient inlet valves of a ducted vacuum help you to reach all parts of your home effortlessly. An Aussie Vac ducted vacuum will speed up and simplify how you clean your home, giving you more time for the important things in life - you and your family.

6. Ducted vacuums are whisper quiet

Ducted vacuum systems are quiet. Period. The loud, irritating noise associated with portable vacuum cleaners just doesn't exist with an Aussie Vac ducted vacuum system. The power unit is usually located well away from living areas, so you can vacuum without disturbing other activities going on in your home. Mufflers and silencers can also be fitted to most models to reduce sound levels even further.

7. Ducted vacuums are low maintenance

Aussie Vac ducted vacuum systems do not need to be light and portable because you don't have to drag them around. As such they are designed to provide a large dirt receptacle, with a holding capacity many times that of a portable vacuum. A ducted vacuum's filter bags or buckets require changing only two or three times a year at most.

8. Ducted vacuums are easy to install

Contrary to popular belief, ducted vacuum systems are relatively easy to install. Homeowners can, and do, install ducted vacuum systems easily, as no special skills or tools are required. Aussie Vac offers a range of ducted vacuum installation materials, installation DIY kits, as well as a hassle-free installation service around Australia.

9. Ducted vacuums increase your home's value

Aussie Vac ducted vacuum systems are a semi-permanent feature and an excellent selling point for your home. Why? They not only make cleaning a breeze, they are built to last. That combination will increase the value of your home - well in excess of the original purchase price!

10. Ducted vacuums are insured

As a ducted vacuum system is a semi-permanent structure in your house, it is covered under building insurance. Together with our affordable repairs and maintenance service, you have complete peace of mind in case something should go wrong.

These are just some of the many reasons for considering an Aussie Vac ducted vacuum system. The good news is there is an Aussie Vac system to suit any size home or office.

What is a Ducted Vacuum?

Simply put, a ducted vacuum system is the easier, faster, healthier way to clean your home.

Ducted vacuum systems have gone from being luxury items in the 1970's and '80s, to being an affordable must-have alternative to portable vacuum cleaners for many Australian homeowners.

A semi-permanent fixture, a ducted vacuum consists of four key components:

Power unit:

The power unit runs the ducted vacuum system and is usually located in a garage or underneath the house. The dust collection is also stored at the same location. Because you don't have to drag the power unit around with you, ducted vacuum systems are generally much more powerful than portable vacuums.

PVC pipework and ducting:

PVC pipework connects the ducted vacuum power unit and collection bag to the vacuum outlets in each room. You'll never have to worry about unsightly PVC piping as it's usually installed in the ceiling, walls or floor.

Inlet Valves:

These are installed at strategic locations throughout the home, making it easy to simply attach your vacuum hose and clean the room you're in. An average size home only needs three ducted vacuum points, and Aussie Vac specialists make sure that every corner is accessible.

Vacuum hoses and attachments:

These include a lightweight hose (9mt , 10mt or 12mt lengths) and accessories for vacuuming carpet, rugs, floorboards, curtains, your car... basically you can vacuum anything in your house. Because you're only holding the front end of the vacuum, it's never a physical strain.

Aussie Vac install ducted vacuums into new or existing homes and, thanks to the reliability of our systems, offer you a hassle-free cleaning experience time after time.

Why Aussie Vac?

Aussie Vac ducted vacuum systems are one of the highest quality systems on the market. They are much more effective than most builder-supplied products. At Aussie Vac we thoroughly plan the system to suit your home, so it won't be undersized.

We also provide you with expertise and top-notch customer service, from our unbiased (and obligation-free) advice to our professional installation and our repairs service.

Low Suction

Ducted Vacuum system working, but you have low suction?

You may be able to fix it yourself with a couple of easy checks that may save you a service call!!

The filter bag:

Is the bag too full?
Is the bag clogged up with fine powdery matter?

We recommend that you replace your ducted vacuum filter bag every 6 months for the best cleaning performance and a longer motor life.

The Hose:

Your ducted vacuum hose may have something stuck inside the hose.

Perform the following tests when the hose is not connected to the system..

Coin test: Drop a coin or other small object down the hose to see if it is clear.

Garden hose test: push a garden hose or a similar object through the Ducted Vacuum hose if there is a stubborn blockage. Do not turn on the water!

Tools: Make sure the cleaning tools are clear of any blockages. Hair pins and other slender objects can get stuck and catch other debris over time, forming a blockage.

The power unit:

Is the lid on securely?

Has the rubber ring around the pipe, to which the filter bag attaches to inside the drum, leaking air or come loose?

The lid & rubber ring need to be secured for the unit to work correctly.

The filter screen underneath the bag:

Is the filter screen, located under the filter bag and flat metal plate (bag spacer) clean and clear of fluff or lint? This needs to be clear at all times. Give it a wipe with a damp cloth to clear the dust/debris.

With this in mind, when placing the metal plate (bag spacer) back in the bottom of the drum, ensure that it is standing on its small feet and not flipped over.

The Inlet Valves:

Are all the inlet valve doors sealing completely shut?
Is there low suction at all the inlet valves?

If the inlet doors are not sealing completely, the inlet valve may need replacing.

All inlet doors need to be sealed completely for the unit to work.

If you have followed these steps and the issue has not yet been alleviated, we can advise you on the best course of action.
